HAITI INSTITUTE EVANGELIQUE DE (of) LA BALIENE
MENNONITE SCHOOL
Mr Joel Buissereth, administrator
The students of our school, Institute Evangelique de La Baliene want to plant coffee trees to put coffee on the market because Haiti’s economy prevents schools from functioning and most parents can’t afford the education of even one child. This program addresses both the economic and the educational problems. This project is a way for our school to become self-supporting and eventually we can spread this program in other communities as well. Each student that is sponsored will plant 50 coffee plants and some fruit trees to provide shade for the coffee trees. The coffee crops will be sold in Haiti and in the U.S. as well because coffee is the number two imported product into the United states besides fuel We believe there is a significant piece of the coffee market waiting for the Haitian organically grown coffee especially among the churches. The students and the school will receive equal share of the coffee crops in time of harvest.
Institute Evangelique de La Baliene was started in 1984. A group of Mennonite Disaster Volunteers went to Haiti in 1963 to rebuild homes that were destroyed by Hurricane Flora that nearly destroyed the southern part of the country. In 1983, that group of men and women got together in Moundridge, Kansas to reflect on their experience in Haiti. Rachel and Joel were attending Hesston College at the time. The group asked Joel to share his experience about the Hurricane. At the end of the meeting, the group gave Joel and Rachel Buissereth $585 to help them with their schooling. Instead of using the money for their own needs, they decided to build a Christian school in La Baliene. The school began with 50 students and now there are 520 students and growing.
The school year starts the end of September and ends in June. Their goal is to reach 5,000 students for the Lord if He allows enough time. Their greatest blessing in La Baliene is seeing the students making decisions to follow Christ as their Lord and Savior. Today 85% of the people who are attending our church represents the young people from our school. Praise the Lord!
